Casuals beware : this game literally stacks the cards against you.

There are times that the games punishes your progression (unlocking an encounter that is too difficult, and the card is locked in place until you defeat it) and sometimes you will be penalized because of your rotten luck (inevitable curses and health damages). And while players blessed with dynamic visual acuity are less susceptible to chances, it is impossible to determine the outcome of chances card by skill alone, and in the end it will come down to luck.

While games in the Dark Souls series are praised for being difficult, their best feature are being fair; the game punishes mistake and rewards discipline and skill. Hand of Fate, however, suffers from the common issue of balancing between difficulties, luck, and skill.

I want the narrator to narrate my life.

Classic Supergiant Games: amazing OSTs, stunning visuals, and you know from the get-go that this story isn't going to have a happy ending.

Played for a bit, decided to refund the purchase because I didn't like the grind.

Regretted the decision throughout the weekend. Re-purchased the game.

Came to Columbia for the girl, came back with tears instead. Now I have to brawl a bear if I want to ever feel manly again.

If the trailers are not enough to convince you to play this gem I don't know what will.

This game is even worse than the Bioshock Remastered. It will crash every single time when starting a new game without a specific fix; the fact that I learned this fix from an unofficial Steam discussion thread, or that the fix doesn't do anything to the random crashes didn't help.

Stay away from this abomination and play the original, would you kindly.

For those wondering: NO IT IS NOT FIXED!

Calling this atrocity a remaster is a slander and an offense to the original game. Audio quality is ♥♥♥♥, game crashes frequently while opening map, and Lord have mercy on your soul if it crashes when you're saving.

Survivor difficulty is a joke and clearly lacks proper balancing, you'll understand when you reach the first Bouncer fight.

Just do yourself a favor, get the original version, AND AVOID THIS GAME LIKE A PLAGUE.

The concept is great, art is decent, but the game mechanics is an atrocity. A lot of people are complaining about the UI and controls but it's the game mechanics which makes the game simply unplayable.

At its core this game is the guilt-free version of This War of Mine scavenging run, minus the fun. Managing four thieves down to their every bit of action in a fast-paced game when you can barely keep them together in one screen is about as bad as it can get.

Plus side is that the devs are listening to the community and are willing to put extra work to make the game better, but as it is now I can't recommend this game.

Port is not perfect but still playable, playing using an XBOX controller is recommended. Logitech works too but will leave you frustrated during the QTEs because instead of using the buttons' corresponding logo (A, B, X, Y, RT/LT, RB/LB) they use ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ numbers.

This might seem like a minor annoyance at first but it can and will cost you a lot of deaths.

A giant monster is pummeling me and you expect me to remember which buttons are numpad 6 and 8?

Also I don't know which is weaker, Steam's VAC or this game's voice acting.

Still, those who were born just in time to play this gem in the original version 10 years ago will appreciate the nostalgia, and those born too late will appreciate how they make games in those good old days.

Dark Souls II is what you get when the guys at From Software wants you really, really dead. Several things that they did better than DaS:

+ They fixed how the PvP works (at least it's fun in low-mid SM tier, before every player you came across is basically a Sentier-swinging Havel). Covenant feels a bit "grind-ish" but gives different rewards for every rank. Limited means to invade discourages people from invading thougtlessly. Lagsouls and phantom range still exist though, which is a bit annoying but can be prevented with region lock matchmaking.

+ Game gets harder the more you die. Enemy despawns after so many tries means souls are a finite resource and should be used with careful planning. Also lowering HP as the hollowing takes place is a nice reason to not die, should you need another.

However there are several areas were DaS II failed to deliver:

- Level design is a total immersion breaker. In DaS you can go anywhere, each areas are basically connected to one another and makes a logical transition. Meanwhile in DaS II you'd be forced to warp back to Majula eventually, and the transition is terrible. Take the Old King path, for example: you go through an abandoned royal hunting ground, arrived in an abandoned mining facility filled with poisonous gas, which leads to a giant windmill. When you finally arrived at the top of the windmill, you take another elevator going up and you'd arrive to a sinking fortress made from iron, in the middle of an active volcano.

- Boss fights (and the boss itself) are badly designed. DaS have some of the most memorable boss fights. Take Sif: a giant wolf swinging a giant greatsword and you'd actually understand how the sword came to the wolf's possession. Or the intimidation you felt when you go into Anor Londo royal hall and had to face the Ornstein and Smough duo. Here in DaS II we have a giant boss, the last of his race, ripping his own arm in an attempt to club you to death.

- Badly written lore/story that doesn't even compare to DaS. Who was the Lost Sinner? What sin did she commit? How did she came to posses a fragment of the old witch soul? The lore in Souls Series is always obscure, but in the original game they actually had a story about the great lords and bosses.

Despite all that this is a game that I enjoy thoroughly (60+ hrs in now, can see myself investing another 100 into this game). This is a good game by itself, although not a worthy successor of the original Dark Souls.
