“Game Boy” Jack Kairo was once a rising star in the North East’s independent wrestling scene, known for his ridiculously named moves and stunning athleticism. Then, like so many talented Americans before him, he hopped on a plane with dreams of touring Japan’s prestigious wrestling promotions and making a name for himself by testing his mettle against some of the best-trained wrestlers in the world. He got his wish in the first round of Japan’s famed “Worldwide Race to 100” tournament. There he came face to face with a rising star from Japan, an undefeated rookie with a Muay Thai background nicknamed “The Devourer.” And Jack was devoured. Lured into an unbreakable clench and concussed with an endless barrage of expertly-aimed knees to his nose, The Devourer left Kairo a bloody, twitching mess on the canvas. Famed throughout Japan as a loser and the victim of the most brutal beatdown ever witnessed in a puroresu ring, Jack flew back to America as a broken-down, bitter young man.

Jack Kairo then spent the next several years working odd jobs to pay the bills and commentating on the sloppy technique of “modern” indie wrestlers on his middlingly successful podcast. However, the tragically premature death of his beloved trainer eventually awakened the hunger in Jack’s heart. A kind, deeply intelligent wrestler that spent half a decade working with him believed in him; but for years, Jack had done nothing to prove that man right. It was time to change that; it was time to honor his memory. Mr. Kairo returned to wrestling training in earnest, learning every move in the book and developing several techniques of his own. And like a phantom, he returned to the promotions he previously haunted and claimed titles from “the living” before disappearing into the ether. He proved his strength to himself and that (along with a few meager paychecks) is all he needed from those old places.

As the revitalized Jack Kairo moved on to fighting in various promotions across the world, he developed a reputation for demonstrating clever little tricks in the midst of his toughest matches. A luchador friend of his even began jokingly referring to him as a “zorro,” or “fox.” And so, when he combined that nickname with his reputation for briefly showing up in promotions like a ghost, he coined a new nickname for himself. “The Phantom Fox” was finally born.

“The Phantom Fox” has become more popular than “Game Boy” ever was, but Jack Kairo has yet to revisit the Worldwide Race to 100. The Devourer reigns supreme over the tournament’s home promotion as their world champion. What’s more, the only loss on the champion’s record came from a veteran’s roll-up pinfall. The Devourer seriously injured that veteran in their rematch and the “old man” was forced to retire.

Is The Phantom Fox afraid of losing to Japan’s biggest threat or afraid to relive the trauma that shaped him into the wrestler he is today? In truth, he is both. But that fear will not hold him back for much longer. A letter formally requesting entry into this year’s tournament rests on Jack Kairo’s desk.
