Version 7.0: Everything Old Is New Again
It's been a busy few years, but as of 2024 I finally decided to get back into DD1 mods, and mustered up the effort needed to search through half a decade of updates and new stuff. Thus, I have overhauled this entire modlist, mostly in-line with my previous "design principles" but with tighter criteria. I've kept lucky (version) number seven to honour my legacy as a dumb kid trying to get mods to work, but really it's all-new!
I will continue to troubleshoot bugs, fill out some mods, remove anything causing problems, and so on; however, any changes from now on will likely be pretty minor, unless something crazy cool comes out that I can't pass up!
Version 7.10: Added skins for a few characters that didn't have them; added Mafe's Drowned Crew rebalance to fix the base-game crash-to-desktop bug.
Version 7.11: Added DD2 Duelist class. Will monitor for clashes with Dragon's Duelist class.
Version 7.20: Rejigged backgrounds, skins, and fire patches; updated the Philomath; added a couple more guys.

Disclaimers
  • This collection is designed for use with all DLCs! That means Shieldbreaker, Musketeer, Colour of Madness, and Crimson Court, and with all of their components activated too, such as Districts and the Flagellant.
    Not using all of these DLCs together may break this collection, unless you manually turn off any mods that use DLC content.

  • I use this collection alongside special techniques to make the game run better with lots of mods! Check out this guide for details; I personally did not go as far as downloading the patched .exe, but I did run the batch file to improve the memory of my own .exe, and I did edit the max_resource_entries file, and I do use the -disable_monster_pre_loading command. YMMV!

  • I've tried to put mods that go together next to each other in the list; so all of Marvin Seo's mods together, all the QoL mods together, etc. but I have made exceptions when necessary to get it to work (see 'load order' below). The Seraph, for example, is separate from MS' other mods because it needs to be for its fire patch to work, and for some reason the Vestal fire patch didn't work with the other fire patches, so I moved it to the 'base game modifications' section, along with the Crusader fire patch and Musketeer changes for symmetry. Method to the madness!

  • The order of the mods in this collection is the same as the load order I use! See this guide for more information; if I have done something contrary to that guide, then it is probably because the mod itself has said to put it somewhere different in the load order than might immediately be obvious, or I have actively had to troubleshoot it by moving it around (as with the Vestal fire patch discussed above).

    A quick tip: there are a few ways to edit load order using external programs or file editing or whatever that allow you to avoid the tedious in-game mod manager, but the EASIEST (and still very fast) way is just to hit 'Unsubscribe From All' here (and unsubscribe from any other Darkest Dungeon mods you may have), then launch the game once to make sure it's "refreshed" with no mods, then close it and come back to this collection; next, click the little subscribe plus on each mod one-by-one from bottom to top, letting each mod fully install before moving on to the next, and do NOT use the 'Subscribe To All' button. Then the mod order in-game will naturally match the order here!
    I've seen some guides say it should be done top to bottom, but that resulted in the reverse of the order I wanted. Maybe check with a couple of mods first, to see how it works for you, and then once you know, you can unsubscribe from everything and re-launch and start again!

So what is this modpack all about exactly?
  • I want this collection to be a cohesive, fully-formed, DLC-like expansion to vanilla Darkest Dungeon, focusing on Sunward Isles as the new area; to this end, I have only selected class mods that have Sunward Isles trinkets and stuff like that. I've also tried to stick to content that feels like it could be in the base game, both in terms of style and quality. Also, I must admit I prefer new classes as the primary way to add content (rather than monster packs, for example), just because they give the player more things to think about and control and mess around with and combine, and because many come with their own monsters anyway (plus the entirety of the Sunward Isles is new stuff too!)

  • I have a few specific rules I try to stick to (nothing from other franchises, nothing that breaks established setting rules, etc.) but I make exceptions for these when I feel it better serves the overall thrust of the modpack, so it isn't worth going through them in detail.
    As a couple of examples, the Saw Hunter and Knight of Cain are Bloodborne-inspired characters, but BB fits so well with DD's universe that I included them anyway; and while I have generally avoided animal-people mods outside of transformations like the Abomination, the Practitioner is a home-grown Sunward Isles character, so I couldn't help including him!

  • I have also added both the Runaway class AND the requisite patches to unify 'fire' as a mechanical concept across many different classes; this increases synergy and verisimilitude between them, and acts like a "new mechanic" added in the "DLC" of this modpack, a bit like how Burn DoT was added to DD2 alongside the OG Blight and Bleed.

  • In terms of base game changes, I have added a few QoL mods and some fixes and stuff, just to raise overall quality and ease-of-use without affecting balance (so no extra stacking or similar, though some new characters have Antiquarian-style loot mechanics). I have made the Musketeer unique from the Arbalest, I have included Crusader and Vestal in the new fire mechanics (like how they have Burn attacks in DD2), and I have tweaked the Crimson Court and the Colour of Madness, to make the former less attention-hungry in the early game and the latter more in-line with the other regions (without getting rid of what makes each one unique, such as the pre-set maps & Crimson Curse, or endless mode & Comet Shards!)
    I have also buffed roster size, stagecoach recruits, and nomad wagon stock, but this is simply to help cope with the huge number of new characters and trinkets available.
    The biggest single change is an overhaul to the Drowned Crew; without it, the Anchorman's 'pin' ability causes a crash-to-desktop and possible save-file corruption. This is actually a base-game bug, so I consider it a fix rather than a true rebalance!

  • This collection is constantly evolving! Since it is so focused on the Sunward Isles mod, and I have had to omit a lot of stuff that doesn't play nice with it, I may also make "alternate" versions that focus on different modded areas instead (like the Mountain or Pet Cemetery), so I can use characters that don't have Sunward Isles trinkets. I'll also be constantly prowling the workshop for new mods that add content or make older stuff viable for this collection, like new characters, Sunward Isles patches, and maybe even dungeon compatibility mods.
    In the meantime, though, enjoy this modpack!
